This showcase was a true celebration of classical ballet and modern dance, artfully melding tradition with contemporary artistry to create an unforgettable experience. Monmouth Academy of Ballet continues to set the bar for excellence in ballet education and performance.
Showcasing Talent and Dedication
The Studio Series Performance 1.0 highlighted the incredible talent of MAB’s dancers, who dedicated themselves to learning choreography for three unique pieces in just eight weeks. With rehearsals held one day per week, their commitment to perfecting each movement was nothing short of extraordinary. The performance was a testament to the skill, passion, and perseverance of these young artists.
Each piece featured in the Studio Series Performance seamlessly blended classical ballet with modern dance elements, demonstrating the Academy’s dedication to fostering well-rounded dancers. The choreography, artfully crafted by both Ellen Gunn Taylor and Jeffrey Shirbroun, challenged performers to push their boundaries while staying rooted in the elegance and discipline of classical ballet.
The Highlight of Our Winter Season
As the grand finale of the winter season, the Studio Series Performance 1.0 marked a significant milestone for Monmouth Academy of Ballet. This event not only showcased the dancers’ growth and artistry, but also brought the first half of MAB’s year to a triumphant close. Families, friends, and members of the Central Jersey community gathered in Red Bank to celebrate the dancers’ achievements and witness the magic of their performance.
An intimate affair, the performance took place in the main ballet studio at Monmouth Academy of Ballet. Dancers were able to deliver an up-close look at the piece, making each audience memeber feel the performers were dancing solely for them. The backdrop of the Red Bank’s beautiful, holiday trimmed downtown made for the perfect winter setting. With snow (from the weekend’s winter BroadWalk events) floating in the air our dancers performed three beautiful and uniquely choreographed pieces.
The first piece, ‘Spirit’, was a modern piece choreographed by the students themselves! Each dancer added their own individual style and creativity to the piece, taking what their instructor Mr. Jeffrey delivered during class, and utilizing it to express themselves through the first piece.
The second, ‘Snow’, was choreographed by studio owner, Ellen Gunn Taylor, and was a traditional nod to her favorite scene from the ‘The Nutcracker’.
The finale of Studio Series 1.0, ‘Sugar’, beautifully choreographed by instructor of the MAB intensive, Mr. Jeffrey, utilized the principles and movements of Paul Taylor technique the students learned and mastered throughout the series.
Classical Ballet Meets Modern Innovation
The Monmouth Academy of Ballet’s Studio Series Performance stood out for its innovative approach to blending classical ballet with modern dance. Each piece told a unique story, captivating audiences with dynamic choreography, intricate formations, and emotive expression. This fusion of styles not only highlighted the dancers’ versatility but also reinforced the Academy’s mission to provide a comprehensive dance education.
The addition of the Paul Taylor technique truly let dancers experiment with feeling, expressiveness of movement and to not fear interesting shapes. Where classical ballet highlights technique, safety, elegance and grace the addition of modern technique let them expand their creativity and versatility in the dance studio. Rolling and cartwheeling across the floor, definitely not part of their classical training, was exciting from across the spectrum of dancer levels.
